The City of Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department is offering the American Red Cross Lifeguard course February 16, 2016 through March 1, 2016 (Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday only). Tuesday and Thursday classes are from 4pm-7pm and Saturday classes are from 12pm-3pm. This course will be taught in a hybrid learning format, which includes more water sessions as well as classroom sessions. Attendance is required at all classroom and water sessions to successfully pass the course.
Applicants must be at least 15 years old and take a prerequisite test in order to register for the course. The prerequisite test will be held on the first day of class, February 16th, at the Civic Center indoor pool. This test consists of a 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl and breaststroke, while using rhythmic breathing. It also includes a timed, 20-yard swim, recovery of a 10-pound weight and treading water for 2 minutes, using legs only.
The course fee is required once the applicant has passed the prerequisite testing. The complete fee for the course is $170. The applicant will pay a $135 registration fee to the City of Oak Ridge and an additional $35 paid online to the American Red Cross. Enrollment is limited.
For further information or to register for the prerequisite test, call the Recreation and Parks Department at (865) 425-3450 or email
