The FOL was organized in 1959 to increase the opportunities for the association of persons interested in books and libraries; to increase the facilities and services of the Oak Ridge Public Library; and to enrich the cultural opportunities available to the citizens of the Oak Ridge area. Members do this by selling books and other items at very low prices through Book Sales held several times a year and through the two Book Nooks in the Library Lobby with materials available for sale all the time. FOL supports ORPL by organizing and funding the children's summer programming, and by buying needed items for the Library that fall outside the annual budget, including publications, the self-service checkout station, and furniture.
