Hans Vogel was elected to fill one of three vacant seats on the Oak Ridge City Council in November of 2016. He was sworn in at the regular city council meeting on December 12, 2016.

Mr. Vogel is also the Directorate Operations Manager, Neutron Sciences Directorate, at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), leading the team responsible for operations support functions for the roughly 750 person organization, and integration with the neutron science mission of the Directorate and related ORNL operations. The Neutron Sciences Directorate operates two of the Department of Energy’s “National User Facilities,” the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).

Mr. Vogel has over 22 years of progressive experience working in technical, operations, management, and project capacities in the nuclear field. He served as Nuclear Systems Division Director for the US ITER Project Office at ORNL, responsible for the Tokamak Cooling Water System, the Tokamak Exhaust Processing System, Electron Cyclotron Transmission Lines, Ion Cyclotron Transmission Lines, Pellet Injection, and Disruption Mitigation for the fusion reactor experiment in France. Prior to his return to ORNL in 2013, he worked at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) as a Senior Project Manager within the Strategic Projects Division, and completed a 22-month “Intergovernmental Personnel Assignment” with DOE’s Office of River Protection, Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) Project. His role was as the Nuclear and Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) Program Manager, as well as the technical response liaison with the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board for the WTP Project.

Mr. Vogel has a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nevada-Reno and a MS in Environmental Engineering from Washington State University, and was awarded the Washington State University, Tri-Cities Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2015.

Mr. Vogel is a Desert Storm Veteran, having served in the Army Corps of Engineers on active duty in the US and Europe for over five years following his ROTC commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in 1987. Mr. Vogel left active service in 1993, having reached the rank of Captain, and receiving military awards to include the Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in 1999.

Mr. Vogel, a graduate of the Leadership Oak Ridge class of 2015, is also a Board Member for Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC).

His wife, Dana, and their two sons, Kyle and Evan (now away at college), along with their dog, Cheyenne, make Oak Ridge their home.
