Oak Ridge is being honored with a 2016 Playful City USA designation for the 5th time. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the national recognition program honors cities and towns across the country for making their cities more playable. Oak Ridge was selected again this year because of the City’s commitment to playground safety, to managing accessible parks and trails and because of their fun and free events like Graduation Celebration and other large City events.

Matt Reedy, Oak Ridge Playful City USA Coordinator, stated that “Oak Ridge is honored to be selected for a 5th consecutive year. This award is earned each year on the backs of our hard working staff and would not be possible without their can-do attitude.” Reedy continued that, “City-staff members Cindi Gordon and Barbara Spratling do a great job putting on our annual Play Day event at the Secret City Festival. The Parks Department crew, led by Billy Pickett and Wade Cordell, works tirelessly throughout the year to inspect and protect playgrounds, parks and trail areas enjoyed by everyone. Jen Laurendine with Oak Ridge Schools is working to ensure the children in our city are making healthy choices each day. Each of these staff, and many others are what makes Oak Ridge a Playful City USA community.”

“We are thrilled to recognize these communities that have invested their time and efforts to put kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “Balanced and active play is crucial to the well-being of kids and the communities in which these children thrive. By integrating play into cities, the leaders of Playful Cities USA are working to attract and retain the thousands of families that want homes in close proximity to safe places to play.”
