CIVIL ENGINEER SALARY GRADE: 27 ($54,704 - $68,380)

Engineering Section Public Works Department (Single vacancy due to promotion)


Under the direction of the City Engineer, the incumbent provides professional engineering assistance to all Public Works Divisions including water distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, streets, drainage and building maintenance. The incumbent will review development plans and specifications, and inspect contracted work.


1. Serves as a project manager over the sanitary sewer rehabilitation project.
2. Develops and maintains a hydraulic model of the City’s water distribution system.
3. Plans, directs and conducts field inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with engineering plans, contracts, specifications, codes and ordinances.
4. Plans, assigns, directs and evaluates the work of assigned staff.
Prepares requests for proposals to solicit statements of qualifications from consultants and directs and assists outside consultants to prepare plans and specifications needed for formal bidding on City construction projects.
5. Provides conceptual planning and design of City-owned construction projects that exceed the capability of internal staff and that will require services of outside consultants.
6. Participates in the preparation of designs and plans for Public Works projects, including the review of development engineering plans and representing the Department in the site review process.
7. Coordinates all departmental maps, plans, records and technical information; prepares specifications for construction materials; prepares and reviews all project details for City engineering projects.
8. Participates in the selection, direction and monitoring of professional consultants.


1. Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction or a closely related field and three to five (3-5) years experience in Civil Engineering with at least one (1) year of supervisory experience preferred.
2. Registration with the State of Tennessee as a Professional Engineer required for Civil Engineer; registration with the State of Tennessee as an Engineer-In-Training for the Civil Project Manager position.
3. Possession of a valid State of Tennessee driver’s license or ability to obtain.
